The past week(s) has been unusually social. I was live-drawing at a children’s congress. I co-hosted a couple of workshops at the Design Museum. I updated the front page image for the City of Reykjavík (not social but did entail a few emails). Last night I attended a real house party with more than ten maskless people.
Other things worth mentioning:
Best purchase this week: Pink tulips. Blood oranges.
Good news: Spring.
Trending tools: Ballpoint pen and a power sander.
Currently watching: People like us and the Severance
Currently reading: Freud, Sartre and Kripke for my vanity philosophy degree.
I also liked this insightful article.
The ongoing war in Ukraine. I don’t know how to find meaning in weekly highlights when thinking about it. Here are three visual stories from Ukranian artists I would like to share with you:
Anna Sarvira Draws Daily Life in Ukraine for the Moma Magazine
“We Are Safe, the Bomb Shelter Is Fine,” by Anya Ivanenko & Jenya Polosina
Bunkered Down in Kyiv by Zhenya Oliinyk
I tried to draw something meaningful but all that appeared on the paper was a sad peace dove with a sunflower and a comment on the most dangerous animal:
Now, the classifieds!
It is always nice to end the week on a positive note, preferably including a bird. Therefore I have decided to share with you a re-drawn bird meme I got sent recently. It shows a small owl native to New Zealand before and after having a bath. The Māori call this owl ruru because they thought its call sounds just like that; ru-ru. But the early settlers of New Zealand called it morepork because they heard it say morepork. You judge for yourself.
And the Morepork was (or wasn’t) the inspiration for the name of Terry Pratchett’s city of cities, Ankh-Morpork. Seemingly he said it wasn’t but then it’s described as forming one half of the city’s coat of arms.
